What do you get excited about?
Every year, there are many seasons, events, and occasions I get overwhelmingly (almost dangerously) excited about – Christmas, summer holidays, first day of snow, camping trips, Thanksgiving… the list goes on. But since being a part of LIFT Church, this list has become, without a doubt, much much longer. And one of the many added events to this list is, of course, the LIFT Leadership Retreat. Please sit tight, and let me explain to you why.
Maple Grove will treat you well. They offer a large list of amenities; a refreshing swimming pool on a hot summer day, a beautiful beach volleyball court sitting on golden sands equivalent to the Bahamas, a basketball court with an NBA-regulated rim height of precisely 10 feet, a baseball diamond so crisp and shiny that your fiancée will envy, and a peaceful 2km hiking trail, where you are guaranteed to encounter majestic animals in their natural habitats, and maybe even a piece of your soul.
How often have we heard stories of students falling into all sorts of stresses, fighting battles of mental health and substance abuse, being influenced by their peers that “university is a place to find yourself and be yourself”. Although this may have some truth behind it, it is undoubtedly a perilous journey.
I find LIFT Church to be unique. Through the hope of Jesus, LIFT plants churches within major university campuses in major cities to be culture influencers. To shift people from self-followers to Jesus followers.
“To see fully realized churches planted on campuses and thereby see cities transformed with the hope of Jesus”
At this year’s Leadership Retreat, you will learn about the heart of LIFT Church, and in turn, allow God to transform yours. To have a heart that longs to reach not only university students, but everyone you interact with.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
God had a message to deliver to the nation of Judah. This request, this call for a messenger for God almost seems like He’s eliciting an answer from Isaiah. Shortly before this request, Isaiah felt guilty, unclean, unworthy, inadequate to be commissioned to be sent…
“Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
But God, in His saving grace delighted to show mercy, didn’t see Isaiah’s uncleanliness, but his willingness and ability to deliver God’s message to His people.
Don’t we feel inadequate sometimes? Don’t we sometimes have this inauthentic feeling to work for His Kingdom? Maybe we have, rooted in us, a fear to lead? At this year’s Leadership Retreat, I promise you, you will walk out, shouting to God,
“Here am I. Send me.”
And similar to Isaiah, you will, for the rest of your life, serve God, feeling challenged, equipped, and empowered to lead boldly and spread the Good News of Jesus.
I’d be lying to you if I said, “LIFT Church is full of people who are insincere and uncaring.” If I can be honest with you for a minute, I have witnessed and found some of the most genuine and loving people at this church. Men and women who live to inspire one another to serve humbly, work passionately, and love unconditionally. Men and women who yearn to see each other live lives of purpose and faithfulness. And I’m not saying this to boast about our church, but to simply boast about Jesus, because ultimately, He is the One who we look to. He is the One who we follow and strive to be like. He is the One who has transformed our lives.
The community here at LIFT Church is one of the reasons why I am here today. The first thing I found when I walked into LIFT four years ago was community. And you will find exactly that when you join us at this year’s Leadership Retreat. Let me be the first to say, “Hey, my name’s Brian. I would love to meet you and get to know you!”
It’s one thing to learn and absorb all the teachings to serve and lead, but I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit when we come to Him in vulnerability and openness to allow Him to transform our hearts. To turn our attention to Him and become aware of His presence in our lives. I believe in the move of the Holy Spirit when we come together as one body of Christ to respond in powerful worship and in faithful prayer. At this year’s Leadership Retreat, you will encounter God and witness a renewal in faith.
